Nicaragua, Mayflower medical outreach
In February of 2014 I traveled to Jinotega, Nicaragua to photograph the work that the Mayflower Medical Outreach (MMO) was doing to help hearing impaired children in the region. Without instruction in Nicaraguan Sign Language, children in rural parts of the country were not only unable to receive an education, they were unable to communicate with their families. The Albergue Mayflower residential school for the deaf was founded in 2008. It provides life skills training, extra-curricular activities and vocational training in addition to educational enhancement in tandem with instruction at the local special education primary and secondary schools for students with hearing impairment.
